How to Auscultate Lung Sounds
- Listen to both the anterior and posterior sides of the chest.
- Start at the top and work your way to the bottom of the chest while comparing sides (watch the video for the technique)
- When listening note the following:

What is auscultation of lungs?
Auscultation of the lungs includes breath sounds-its character and intensity, vocal resonance, and adventitious sounds. We will discuss the various types of breath sound, adventitious sounds, and vocal resonance; and their clinical importance and pathogenesis.
What causes Rhonchi in lungs?
Rhonchi occur when air tries to pass through bronchial tubes that contain fluid or mucus. Crackles occur if the small air sacs in the lungs fill with fluid and there’s any air movement in the sacs, such as when you’re breathing. The air sacs fill with fluid when a person has pneumonia or heart failure.
