What could cause an animal cell to burst?
Animal cells do not have cell walls. In hypotonic solutions, animal cells swell up and explode as they cannot become turgid because there is no cell wall to prevent the cell from bursting. In hypertonic solutions, water diffuses out of the cell due to osmosis and the cell shrinks.

Why do cells burst in water?
If you place an animal or a plant cell in a hypertonic solution, the cell shrinks, because it loses water ( water moves from a higher concentration inside the cell to a lower concentration outside ). A single animal cell ( like a red blood cell) placed in a hypotonic solution will fill up with water and then burst.
Can human cells burst?
